Eva Nassif, Member of Parliament for Vimy, was honoured to take part in commemorations and ceremonies for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge over the weekend of April 8th and 9th, and throughout the following week. It was with great humility and pride that I was able to attend the inauguration of Place de Vimy in Parc Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and the ceremony to honour of the legacy of Canadians who served during the First World War and fought the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
“It was with great humility and pride that as the first member of Parliament for Vimy, I was able to attend the inaugural celebration of Vimy Place at Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Park and the ceremony to honor of the legacy of Canadians who served during the First World War and fought at Vimy Ridge” – Eva Nassif
To mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the Battle of Vimy Ridge on April 9, 2017, commemorative events were held at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France and the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Government of Canada led a delegation to France to participate in the commemorative ceremony and other events including the opening of a new Visitor Education Centre.
In 2015, the federal government had increased the number of electoral districts. One particularly important individual, Mr. Fernand Trépanier – who was a World War II veteran and a constituent in what is now the riding Vimy – had campaigned the government for decades to name a riding after the Battle of Vimy Ridge. During the movement of boundaries and creation of new ridings, Mr. Trépanier’s hard work finally came to fruition as the riding of Vimy was created. Shortly before he passed away, he voted as a constituent of Vimy for the first time. Eva Nassif had the honour of paying tribute to him through an SO-31 delivered to the House of Commons on April 10th, the first day back on the hill since the 100th anniversary.
Furthermore, as the first Member of Parliament for Vimy, Eva Nassif will be holding her own event on April 28th, 2017. This event will simultaneously commemorate the heroes of this battle and celebrate Canada’s 150th year of confederation that we have been observing all year.
